Military-grade, aluminum-alloy body —it’s the same 5,000/6,000-series high-strength grade used in the aerospace, commercial transportation and energy industries. Our objective: reduce weight while increasing strength. What’s more, aluminum-alloy is resistant to dents and corrosion.
The fully boxed frame has eight crossmembers (five through-welded) and is made of up to 78 percent high-strength steel. And while stronger and more rigid, this frame is lighter by up to 60 lbs. (27 kg) because many of the components are fabricated using state-of-the-art roll forming and tailor-rolled blanks.
Our goal in building the current Ford F-150 was to set the industry bar for durability for years to come. So we subjected it to over 16 million kilometres of cumulative torture testing – in labs, at proving grounds, over high-altitude passes and through desert valleys, while hauling huge loads and towing heavy trailers at temperature extremes from -28 to 48 degrees Celsius.
Today’s F-150 is not only light in weight, it offers:
• Best-in-class hauling capability.
• Better power-to-weight ratio for faster acceleration and greater pulling power than previous generation.
• More responsive handling.
• Quicker braking.
• And even greater efficiency.
With its high-strength, military-grade, 6000-series aluminum-alloy body and unique 12-sided design in the high-strength steel front frame horn, the Ford F-150 is engineered to be safer than ever before. Crash testing is conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) covering frontal, side and rollover crash worthiness. The F-150 has achieved NHTSA’s overall rating of 5 Stars, the highest score possible.
The 2017 Raptor is meaner AND leaner. It weighs in at approximately 500 pounds (226 kg) lighter than the previous generation, thanks to high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy but also boasts a high-strength, boxed steel frame for maximum capability. Powered by an all-new twin-turbo, intercooled DOHC 24-valve high-output 3.5L EcoBoost® engine with direct fuel injection. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission featuring a manual-shifting mode that delivers impressive power to all four wheels. The 2017 Raptor features high-strength, military-grade 6000-series aluminum alloy and also boasts a high-strength, boxed steel frame for maximum capability. Also on board: Raptor offers impressive running clearance, plus, an all-new four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand transfer case and 3.0-inch FOX Racing Shox with custom internal bypass technology.
